Church Basement Ladies 2: A second helping

Church Basement Ladies 2
Church Basement Ladies 2
Church Basement Ladies2: A Second Helping brings back the characters of local ladies Karin, Vivian and Mavis, all with different views on life, love, and home, yet brought together as the ladies of the local Lutheran Church where they are more than just the basement kitchen ladies, they are the glue that binds the congregation together and creates an unbreakable sisterhood.

Karin (Jean Pietruszewski) is the quiet new leader of the basement kitchen, silent yet strong, facing changes with grace and determined acceptance.

Vivian (Krista Pietruszewski) is the epitome of the “proper Lutheran” woman. She embraces all that is Lutheran yet realizes—begrudgingly—that “times are a changin’.”

Mavis (Renee Jensen) is the farmer’s wife, full of family histories, farming anecdotes, and analogies that will have you laughing so hard you cry.

Karin’s daughter, Beverly (Lily Svendsen), also returns to the home church from “the cities”, where her husband (also a hometown boy) had a fancy office job as an engineer.

The Pastor (Todd Ethier) faces the changing times of the late 60s while dealing with the ladies and his ‘new’ wife.

This play was in constant motion, from songs to dialogue to subtle actions. A hoot, from beginning to end!

Volunteers needed for once-in-a-generation archaeological survey

Whether archaeology is your passion or a childhood dream, you can take part in a unique experience. While the water levels at Lake Bronson are low during the ongoing construction to replace the dam in Lake Bronson State Park, the Minnesota Historical Society, the Department of Natural Resources, and the Kittson CountyHistorical Society are looking for volunteers to assist professional archaeologists to survey the lake basin for archaeological sites.

Archaeologists are interested in identifying and researching any archaeological sites exposedwithin the lake basin, including sites dating thousands of years to remnants of the Works Progress Administration (WPA-era) camp to build the Lake Bronson dam in 1936. Volunteers will get an up-close opportunity to join a pedestrian (walkover) survey with archaeologists by hiking through areas that are typically underwater. No previous experience is necessary – just the ability to walk through the basin on uneven terrain for two hours at a time.

Volunteer shifts will be scheduled throughout July and August, and volunteers will be asked to commit to 8 hours (or more!) throughout the summer. Training will be provided prior to the archaeological surveys. Individuals, as well as educational and community groups are welcome to sign up through the Minnesota Historical Society. All ages are welcome to join.

This is truly a once-in-a-generation opportunity to be part of the historical process!

Middle River Community Club with the amazing grant check to benefit the community playgrounds and parks.
The Middle River Community Club is excited to share some fantastic news that underscores the strength and dedication of our community. The Middle River Legacy Fund has been awarded a generous $10,000 Impact Grant from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines. This achievement would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of Josh Smith from Border Bank, whose successful grant proposal made this funding a reality.

These vital funds will be allocated directly to the enhancement of the Legacy Center’s playground and picnic shelter areas. This improvement aims to create a more inviting and enjoyable space for families, children, and community gatherings. By investing in these facilities, we are not just improving our amenities; we are fostering a sense of community spirit, togetherness, and connection among residents.

In addition to this exciting grant news, the Middle River Community Club is equally delighted to announce the upcoming reopening of the gym floor at the Legacy Center. The newly renovated space looks stunning and has been thoughtfully upgraded to include fresh pickleball lines, catering to the growing interest in this popular sport.

This project was made possible through the collaborative efforts of several dedicated organizations, including Bolduc Flooring, Border Bank, Sportsmen’s Club, Middle River Community Club, and Young’s General Store. Their support demonstrates the power of community partnership and the shared commitment to enhancing the quality of life in Middle River.

While the official reopening date for the gym has yet to be announced, we are eager to welcome everyone back to this revitalized space. The enhancements at both the playground and gym serve as a testament to the importance of community engagement and collective action. Together, we are building a brighter future for all residents of Middle River.
