1. Open your Internet browser and navigate to /.
  2. Click on the link to Helpdesk on the left of the page.
  3. Click on Spybot link on right side under Spyware removal tools.
  4. The Download.com page will open.
  5. Click on Download now link
  6. A File Download dialog will appear.
  7. The Download in Progress page will open
  8. A File Download dialog will appear
  9. Click on the Save button.
  10. The Save As window will open.
  12. Using the drop-down arrow to the right of the Save In field, choose the option Desktop.
  13. Click on the Save button.
  14. The Spybot file will download.
  15. When the download is complete, a Download Complete dialog will appear.
  16. Click on the Close button.
  17. You are now ready to install Spybot.

Once you have downloaded Spybot, you are ready to install it. Instructions for the installation are listed below.

  1. Close all open windows.
  2. Double-click on the downloaded Spybot file icon, located on your Desktop. (It will most likely be called spybotsd13.)
  3. The Select Setup Language dialog will appear.

  4. Choose the option English.
  5. Click on the OK button.
  6. The Welcome to Spybot - Search & Destroy Setup Wizard dialog will open.
  7. Click on the Next button.
  8. The Personal License Agreement dialog will appear.
  9. Enable the I Accept the Agreement field.
  10. Click on the Next button.
  11. The Select Destination Location dialog will appear.
  12. Accept the default settings and click on the Next button.
  13. The Select Components dialog will appear.
  14. Accept the default settings and click on the Next button.
  15. The Select Start Menu Folder dialog will appear.
  16. Accept the default settings and click on the Next button.
  17. The Select Additional Tasks dialog will appear.
  18. Accept the default settings and click on the Next button.
  19. The Ready to Install dialog will appear.
  20. Click on the Install button.
  21. The installation will begin.
  22. The Completing the Spybot - Search & Destroy Setup Wizard dialog will open.
  23. Remove the checkmark to the left of the Run SpybotSD.exe option.
  24. Click on the Finish button.
  25. You are now ready to use the Spybot spyware filter.

After you have used Spybot for the first time, the run process becomes easier. You should always perform the web update before scanning your computer to make sure that you have up-to-date anti-spyware definitions. Instructions for using Spybot on a regular basis are listed below.

  1. Close all open windows.
  2. Click on the Start button in your computer's Taskbar.
  3. A menu will appear.
  4. Hold your cursor over the All Programs option.
  5. Another menu will appear.
  6. Hold your cursor over the Spybot - Search & Destroy option.
  7. A sub-menu will appear.
  8. Click on the Spybot - Search & Destroy option.
  9. A Spybot Legal Stuff dialog will open.

  10. Click on the OK button.
  11. A Compatibility Warning dialog will appear only if you have Ad-aware installed on your computer.

  12. Click on the OK button.
  13. The Spybot - Search & Destroy window will appear.

  14. Click on the Search for Updates button.
  15. The Update Progress dialog will appear.

  16. If updates are available, install them and proceed to Step 18.
  17. If no new updates are available, proceed to Step 18.
  18. Click on the Search & Destroy icon in the upper left-hand corner.
  19. The dialog will change.

  20. Click on the Check for Problems button.
  21. Spybot will begin its search for spyware on your computer. This process can last anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes.
  22. When the process is complete, Spybot will list its findings.

  23. Click on the Fix Selected Problems button.
  24. A dialog will appear, stating that all of the selected objects will be removed.
  25. Click on the Yes button.
  26. A Confirmation dialog will appear, stating that the problems have been fixed.
  27. Click on the OK button.
  28. Click on the Recovery icon in the upper left-hand corner.
  29. The Recovery dialog will appear.

  30. Select the backup file that contains all of the quarantined items.
  31. Click on the Purge Selected Items button.
  32. A dialog will appear, stating that the backup will be removed.
  33. Click on the Yes button.
  34. The spyware will be deleted.
  35. You may close the Spybot - Search & Destroy window.
