Renewing the IP address using a Linksys router

If you've got more than one computer connected * to the Internet using DSL or wireless, chances are you're using a Linksys router. This also means that your PCs IP address will fall into the 192.168.1.x range. If this is the case, you need to renew your broadband, or "WAN" IP address using the following instructions:

  1. Open up Internet Explorer and type 192.168.1.1 into the address bar.
  2. When prompted, enter your username and password and click OK. To determine your username and password, read through the Fast Start guide that comes with your Linksys router. The default username and password are both admin. It is recommended that you change the defaults for security purposes and don't forget to remember what you changed them to.

  3. Once you've logged in, click on the Status tab at the top of the web page.

  4. When the Status page comes up scroll down and click DHCP Release button. Once the WAN IP address goes to 0.0.0.0, click the DHCP Renew button to obtain a new IP address.

* If you have multiple computers connected to the Internet there is an additional charge. Please contact our office for current rates.
