Wiktel Zoom - The Proxomitron

Speeding up your dialup internet downloads.  The Accelerator and ad blocker are free to wiktel customers. (For dial up customers only.  Does not work on high speed connections. High speed internet connections can use the Ad Blocker - see below.)

What Does it Do?

Wiktel Zoom filters web advertisements and compresses web pages in order to speed up your dial-up connection. To use Wiktel Zoom, you need a program called the Proxomitron. It filters ads from web pages and connects to the Zoom proxy server. All the web pages you request from the Internet are first sent to the proxy server where they are compressed before they are sent over the phone line to you.

How Does it Change Your Internet Browsing?

You will notice that many pages will load faster. How much faster depends on the type of web pages that you are browsing. Graphics and text can both be compressed efficiently. Just removing the advertisements on some pages can produce significant speed up.

Because of the compression you may also notice that some pictures and graphics are not as clear. If there is an image that you would like to see more clearly you will need to turn off the accelerator and refresh the page. See the next section to see how to turn the accelerator on and off.

Installation and Use

Installation changes the settings on your dialup connection. The install will ask you whether you want to set up Wiktel Zoom on all your connections. If you only connect to Wiktel, click Yes. If you have other dialup connections to providers other than Wiktel, you should click No, and you will be asked which connections you want Wiktel Zoom installed on (it will only work on connections to Wiktel).

After the Proxomitron is installed you will see a green triangle on your system tray in the lower right hand corner of your screen. This indicates that Proxomitron is active. If you click on the green triangle a small Proxomitron window will open. There are two check boxes to select if you want Ad Filtering (the removal of web page advertising) and Acceleration. As mentioned above if you would like to see a picture more clearly, come to this window, uncheck acceleration and refresh your page. You will see the clearer slower version.

You may have difficulty using the Proxomitron and Acceleration on some sites. If you have any difficulty with a web site simply uncheck Acceleration. The ad filter blocks most but not all pop-up windows. If there is a website that uses pop-ups that are not ads, you may need to uncheck Filter Ads.

 To install the Proxomitron:    Download, then execute Setup.exe 

  If you don't want the accelerator, but want the Ad filter:   Proxomitron includes an Ad filter/blocker.   If you want the Ad filter only (without the accelerator), download and execute Ad Filter Setup  If you want a simpler and less aggressive ad blocker  than the Wiktel ad blocker, see:  http://toolbar.google.com/
