Highways, Streets & Roads
Stephen is directly served by U.S. Highway 75, a primary highway which extends along the western portion of the state all the way to the Iowa border and beyond as far south as Texas. Traveling north on Highway 75 will take you into Canada enroute to the major metropolis of Winnipeg, Manitoba (2 hour trip).
Interstate #29 and U.S. Highways #59 and #32 are close by allowing for reliable access to markets for businesses and the trucking lines based in the city. There are a number of paved county highways entering and exiting Stephen (CSAH) 5 and 6. Along with Fifth street, these roads provide the major thoroughfares and access to the business district and city's industrial areas.
These highways, streets and roads adequately serve Stephen's trade area in all directions. People from Karlstad, Kennedy, Donaldson and Strandquist have access to the city via Highway #75 or CSAH 5. People traveling from Florian (Florian County Park) arrive via CSAH 6. U.S. Highway #75 is the primary route for people from Warren and Argyle.
All the city streets in Stephen are paved and in good driving condition year around. U.S. Highway #75 was newly paved in '96 - '97.
Railroad & Truck Lines
Stephen is currently served by Burlington Northern rail lines which provide service to area elevators. The city is also served by truck lines which take advantage of the major trade networks provided by U.S. Highway #75 and Interstate #29 approximately 15 miles west of Stephen.
Municipal Airport
A municipally owned airport is located at the northeast edge of town. Stephen Municipal Airport has a 2,000 foot hard-surfaced, FFA approved lighted runway and serves both private and commercial interests. Two crop spraying companies are headquartered at the airport. Hangar space and a pilot's lounge are available for owners of privately owned aircraft.
Accessibility To Major Markets
North-south travel is easily accessible from Winnipeg to Fargo-Moorhead and beyond because of U.S. Highway #75. Interstate #29 which intersects Grand Forks, ND and Fargo-Moorhead is within 15 minutes drive from Stephen. Interstate #94 taking you to Minneapolis-St. Paul Intersects through Fargo-Moorhead.
