gambit
[ gam-bit ] noun. a calculated move, strategy, or opening action designed to gain an advantage, especially in negotiation, debate, or competition. Originally a chess term, it referred to sacrificing a piece early in the game to secure a more favorable position. "His opening gambit was to offer a modest concession, hoping it would establish goodwill and create leverage for the more important issues that would follow."
